Royal Game of Ur Rules

The Royal Game of Ur is over 4,500 years old. And it hasn’t lost its players over the centuries! The rules are pretty straightforward, too. Each player has seven pieces and races to get them all across the board and off the other end. Four dice determine how many spaces you can move. The real action happens on the shared track, where you can knock an opponent’s piece off and send it back to the start. To get a piece off the board, though, you need an exact roll.

There are a few things to keep in mind. You can jump over other pieces, for example, but you can’t land on a space where one of your own pieces is already sitting. And if all four dice land with the unmarked sides up, that’s a zero, and your turn is over. Watch the videos to see how it all works, and print out the printable guide to keep next to the board. It’s handy to have the Royal Game of Ur rules right there while you’re still getting used to the game.
