Yote/Dara Rules

Yote and Dara are two traditional African games played on the same board with 24 checkers, but their rules differ.

Yote, popular in Senegal and Mali, is about capturing your opponent’s checkers. Just place a new checker on the board or move one that’s already there by one square. Jump over an opponent’s checker into an empty square, and capture it plus one other checker of your choice.

Dara came from Nigeria and Niger. Think of tic-tac-toe with a twist. First, both players place all their checkers on the board. Then they start moving them, trying to make a row of exactly three. Each time you form one, you can remove an opponent’s checker. Get your opponent down to just two checkers, and you win. The rules are short so that you can learn both games without much trouble.

Learn Yote/Dara with Videos & a Printable Guide

The videos show how the double capture works in Yote, why you can’t make a row of three during Dara’s setup, why a row of four doesn’t count, and what happens when you run out of legal moves. You can also print the guide and refer to it during the game. The Yote/Dara rules and the printable guide cover both games.
